Description:

In what ways can OER inform race-conscious and culturally responsive pedagogy towards redesigning curriculum from an equity and inclusion lens? As part of Title III objectives, grounded in the Native Cases Studies Project, a Community of Praxis (CoPx) was launched in Summer 2022 as a pilot to engage in action research towards implementation of antiracist design frameworks.

Enduring Legacies: Native Cases Studies Project publishes openly-licensed, peer-reviewed case studies to “develop and widely disseminate culturally relevant curriculum and teaching resources in the form of case studies on key issues in Indian Country.” The project, led by Barbara Leigh Smith, is currently a partnership between The Evergreen State College, Northwest Indian College, Salish Kootenai College, Grays Harbor College, The University of Alaska-Anchorage, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and the National Indian Child Welfare Association.

This workshop illuminates CoPx adoption of Native Cases, sharing how this OER can be utilized as an antiracist, culturally responsive resource to build student awareness and understanding of their own culture, personal beliefs, values, and biases, support skill transfer, and promote an engaged learning environment and student-centered experience.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop faculty competence in teaching with inclusive curricula across disciplines – “Integrate and institutionalize diversity and globalism throughout the college” (Strategic Plan, Core Theme 2).
  • Employ Native Cases as a foundational model of antiracist OER resource adoption (CRE-rooted) for future course construction and assessment (Obj 8: By Sept. 2026, the number of faculty who have adopted culturally responsive practices (content and pedagogy) will increase to 170 2019-20 baseline: 0).
  • Improve representation of systemically native cultural experiences in the curriculum to increase institutional competency in response to low enrollment by native students (see IPEDS Data Feedback Report 2020).
