What is New Faculty Seminar?
New Faculty Seminar is a community of practice that provides faculty newly appointed to lecturer and tenure-track roles support and connection. This is especially helpful as people adjust to a new campus or to new types of evaluation such as tenure review. All content will be linked to the criteria for teaching and tenure evaluation at Highline College. The majority of time will be dedicated to meeting the immediate needs of the participants.
Regular meetings (4 times per quarter) provide opportunities for participants to:
- Gain institutional knowledge about the student population, governance structures, student services, and the local community
- Build network among the Highline community, including other instructional and institutional divisions
- Give and receive support with teaching, advising, and student support
- Exploring teaching topics relevant to the criteria used to evaluate teaching and tenure
What to Expect
- 90 minute meetings weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 of each quarter
- Fall 2025 meetings are on Wednesdays, 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Zoom or in 9-109.
- Discussion about what you’re seeing in your classes
- Short presentation or resources sharing related to the content/theme of the session
- Activities: short self-reflection writing activities, peer input, guest speakers, visits to departments/programs on campus
- A collaborative notes document will capture major themes, questions, and links to information. While any presented portions will be recorded, most discussions navigate sensitive information so full seminar sessions will not be recorded. NFS shared documents can be found in this folder (NFS participant access only)
