Transparent assignment design – Leave with a TILTed assignment
Incorporating elements of transparent assignment design, such as clearly communicating the purpose, task and criteria, into student assignments can demonstrably enhance students’ success, especially for underserved students. Transparent assignments let students know up front the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind your chosen assignment. They also let students practice with your rubric or checklist against real world examples, so they all begin with the same shared understanding of what good work looks like.
Objective: Faculty will leave with a revised (“TILTed”) assignment.
Before the workshop, please take 15 minutes to review these TILT resources:
- Transparent Assignment Template – TILT Higher Ed
- SBCTC Transparent Assignment example sets
- Optional video to watch: (14 minutes) Using a transparent framework to remove barriers to college students’ success Dr. Winkelmes provides an overview of research and findings from TILT Higher Ed.
Then, come to the workshop with an assignment you’d like to work on. You’ll be paired with a partner and have time to review each other’s assignment (from the viewpoint of a novice student), as well as time to work on your own with feedback from your partner.
