9/22/22 Communities of praxis: Title 3 antiracist professional development

Target audience:

Faculty

Format:

Hybrid (in-person, Room 29-216 or Zoom)

Presenters:

Dr. E.T. Elwin, Dr. Helen Burn, Dr. Christie Knighton, Hara Brook, Bob Scribner

Description:

This workshop highlights, and extends and invitation to join, Title III stipend professional development initiatives through two mediums, Antiracist CoPx & the 4 Connections, offering meaningful opportunities for faculty to develop antiracist, culturally responsive pedagogical strategies for application in instructional design and assessment, placing additional focus on generating authentic connections that strengthen faculty/student relationships towards retention, completion, and other indicators of student success.

Antiracist Design Team

is a Community of Praxis (CoPx) engaging experiential, self-reflective professional development to generate breakthrough ideas and practices and reach common understandings and shared perspectives that guide the work, conceptualizing an outline of best practices for engaging in antiracist peer course review. This framework is grounded in facilitation and community building techniques for communities of practice from the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education and asynchronous learning on applying an equity framework to curriculum revision from the Equity Literacy Institute.

The 4 Connections

are a set of simple practices faculty can use to build connections, a sense of belonging, and supportive relationships with students, and their use appears to correlate with both increased pass rates and narrowed opportunity gaps around pass rates. Their power comes from a commitment to practice them intentionally.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze Title III Strategies and Objectives in alignment with Highline College MFR, Degree Pathways, and Mission/Vision/Values.
  • Recognize the importance of comprehensive professional development towards closing equity gaps and implementing course specific supports to increase pass rates, retention, and graduation (T3 Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 & 8).
  • Evaluate and assess antiracist, culturally responsive pedagogy in correlation to Title III gateway courses
