SUMMARY:Upping Your Video Game: Making Videos with Impact!
DESCRIPTION:\n \nDo you: \n\nWonder whether your videos are helping students grasp the key takeaways?\nWant to make your videos more flexible for customizing student learning?\nNeed to find a way to connect with your students?\nWonder how to make the creative videos you see in other courses?\nWonder how Patrick makes those Potty Picayune Videos look so good?\n\nThis Summer Institute session will focus on planning\, executing\, and using short and longer instructional videos in your courses to support student connection and promote concept mastery. We will look at when to use videos\, how to align video content and assessment\, tools that allow interaction with video\, why video might not be a match for instruction\, and get work time to build some videos. We will briefly look at student created videos and their uses and impact on instruction. \nOutcomes:\n\nInstructors will identify the instructional rationale for creating specific videos (including why they are selecting video instead of or in addition to other instructional avenues).\nInstructors will script the key take-aways and learning moments before creating videos.\nInstructors will be able to identify the best video creation tools for their goals and work processes\nInstructors will connect video content to intended assessment and learning outcomes to ensure alignment.\n\nFacilitator:\nKatie Fiorello\, Instructional Designer with EdTech \nDeliverables:\nBy the end of Summer Institute\, participants will create at least three new videos for an upcoming course using the principles addressed in Summer Institute. \n\n\n\nModality:\n\n\n\nHybrid. SUMMARY:Book Club - The Science of Learning Meets AI
DESCRIPTION: \nSummer can be a great time to pause\, reflect on what we have been experiencing as educators\, and think about what we would like to do differently. Join our summer book club to explore teaching and learning in the context of AI while striving to maintain evidence-based inclusive teaching practices. \nThe authors are both STEM faculty. One is a mathematics professor\, one an adjunct in family medicine. They come to this conversation not as “AI evangelists” but as educators who have been doing this work for a long time and are asking genuinely: where does what we already know meet this new(ish) reality? Where does AI disrupt our practice\, and where might it actually enhance it? And how do the educational frameworks we know\, e.g.\, backward design\, TILT\, UDL hold up? \nWe will read\, discuss\, and solve all of higher education’s issues about AI together… OK\, fine. We probably won’t probably get to that\, but we will try to figure out a more hopeful path forward together. \nBook: The Science of Learning Meets AI: A Practical Faculty Guide to Purposeful Integration\, Student Engagement\, and Ethical Practice  by Lewis D. Ludwig and Todd D. Zakrajsek (books will be provided by TIDL for participants to keep\, at no cost) \nOutcomes:\n\nIdentify connections between evidence-based teaching frameworks and emerging AI integrated practices\nReflect on teaching practices and ways in which they can be modified in the upcoming year\nFacilitate a collegial discussion on a challenging topic\n\nFacilitator:\nLaura Soracco\, English faculty and EdTech Faculty-in-Residence \nDeliverables:\nEach participant will be responsible for facilitating a discussion around one of the book’s chapters. Participants will be provided a guide and a shared space\, and you’ll be the one who comes in with questions and insights to move our conversation in any way that gets us thinking and talking. \n\n\n\nModality:\n\n\n\nOnline \n
