SUMMARY:Teaching and Advising with Compassion
DESCRIPTION: \nThis talk introduces the Compassionate Math Framework\, which outlines the socioemotional factors that contribute to success in mathematics as well as other areas (STEM). Equity and social justice\, as a foundational component of the framework\, is also discussed. This framework is based on the assumption that learning mathematics is both an emotional and intellectual act. The goal of this talk is to bring the affective (emotional) side of learning to the forefront\, a side that is all too often forgotten. \nLearning objectives\n\nExplain how the Compassionate Math framework contributes to student success.\nEstablish the connection between factors in the Compassionate Math framework and issues related to equity and social justice.\nReflect on how participants’ students may appear in the Compassionate Math framework.\nDevelop classroom and advising practices to support a more compassionate classroom.\nEngage with provided resources after the workshop to continue centering students in the advising meeting and classroom.\n\nFacilitator\nDr. Geillan Aly\, Compassionate Math \nModality\nVirtual workshop. Zoom link can be accessed here (Highline login required) \n
